Atomic Models and the Old Quantum Theory

Giancarlo Borgonovi and Bill Scott

The years 1900-1923 saw the development of the old quantum theory. The main milestones of this period are the discovery of the nucleus by Rutherford (1911) and the introduction of the first quantum model of the atom by Bohr (1913).

Methods and ideas developed within the framework of the old quantum theory, although drastically changed by the appearance of QM, still maintained a practical value value in succeeding years (e.g. notations for electronic states, and interpretation of optical spectra).
