131st MEETING OF THE LYNCEAN GROUP OF SAN DIEGO
Date: Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 11:30 AM
Location: Southwestern Yacht Club
2702 Qualtrough Street
San Diego, CA 92106 (Point Loma)
Speaker: Mark Merrifield, Director of the Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego
Topic: Climate Change: Sea-level rise – Global and local perspectives
Abstract:
Tide gauge and other geological records have indicated that sea level has been rising at most coastal locations around the world for well over a century. With satellites and improved ocean observing systems over the past several decades, we now have a clear measure of the globally-averaged change in sea level, an understanding of the causes of sea level change both globally and regionally, and indications that the global trend is accelerating in accordance with climate model projections. Professor Merrifield will discuss some of the sea-level rise challenges facing San Diego and what steps will need to be taken to adapt to our changing coastline.
When Dr. Merrifield’s slides become available, we will add a link so they can be downloaded.
